Giving Back to Taiwan
Last summer vacation, six elite students from NCTU went to Silicon Valley for internships. As an alumnus of NCTU and venerable ethnic-Chinese veteran of Silicon Valley, Huang naturally took it upon himself to receive this group of future talents from Taiwan.
Huang took care of all of the students’ room and board needs and arranged for their internships. Three of the students interned at Novas, while the other three took up internships at Fortemedia. “Succeeding in business will win you praise, but knowing how to give something back brings even greater respect,” notes Wu Chung-yu in speaking about his university classmate.
“Taiwanese people actually have a lot to be proud of,” says Huang, who grew up in Tainan. Wherever they go in the world, Taiwanese are always happy to help one another out. The prowess that Taiwan has built up in the semiconductor sector also means that Taiwanese businesspeople, after having set up businesses in other countries, can ultimately return to Taiwan and enjoy advantages in terms of production and sales. For instance, while United Microelectronics Corporation has been a major Fortemedia shareholder from the beginning, currently maintaining a stake of around 20 percent in the company, it produces all of the chips Fortemedia designs as well.
“Use it well and cherish it.” Regardless of the many years Paul Huang has spent in Silicon Valley, neither the affection he feels for Taiwan nor his confidence in this nation has waned.
