Google to invest fresh $1 billion in OpenAI rival Anthropic
Google has invested more than $1Bn in Generative ai startup Anthropic, according to sources familiar with the situation.
Anthropic, which is best known for its Claude family of AI models, is one of the leading startups in the new wave of generative AI companies building tools to generate text, images and code in response to user prompts.
Google already has an existing commitment of $2Bn in Anthropic, while e-commerce giant Amazon doubled its stake in the AI company to $8Bn late last year.
The new investment builds on Google's past investments of $2Bn in Anthropic and 10% ownership stake in the startup, as well as a large cloud contract between the two companies. In December, Anthropic's revenue hit an annualized $1Bn, which was an increase of roughly 10X year over year.
