Intel appointed Lip-Bu Tan as the chipmaker attempts to recover from a tumultuous four-year run under Pat Gelsinger. The stock jumped 12% in extended trading.

The chip industry veteran, who previously helmed Cadence Design Systems, was an Intel board member but departed last year, citing other commitments.

Tan replaces interim co-CEOs David Zinsner and MJ Holthaus, who took over in December when former Intel CEO Patrick Gelsinger was ousted. Tan is also rejoining Intel’s board.

"I am honored to join Intel as CEO," Tan said in a statement. "I have tremendous respect and admiration for this iconic company, and I see significant opportunities to remake our business in ways that serve our customers better and create value for our shareholders."

China's "Made in China 2025" industrial strategy has put the country on track to become a global leader in smart manufacturing within the next few years, according to a report by Beijing's Renmin University of China.

The project, launched a decade ago, aimed to propel China to the forefront of a slew of Hi-Tech industries, including aerospace, electric cars, robotics and telecommunications.

Although Beijing has become reluctant to publicly name-check the policy in recent years amid global pushback, the strategy nevertheless helped China achieve remarkable progress in several key areas, said Wang Wen, Dean of Renmin University's Chongyang Institute for financial studies.

Beijing has not published an official assessment of "Made in China 2025", but a calculation by the post last year found that 86% of the targets laid out in the plan had been achieved. At a US congressional hearing on "Made in China 2025" in February, US experts expressed alarm at China's fast progress in advanced manufacturing and warned that America risked "losing the next industrial revolution".
