Trump’s Davos Power Play to Rattle Allies and Global Order

US President Donald Trump is set to loom large over this year’s World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, where he is expected to meet global business leaders after addressing the annual gathering.

CEOs from sectors including finance, crypto, and consulting have been invited to a reception following his speech, though details of the agenda remain unclear. Beyond business, Trump’s presence has heightened political tension as he pushes a controversial new initiative onto the global stage.

That initiative, the proposed U.S.-led “Board of Peace,” has triggered confusion and resistance among allies. Trump wants the board’s constitution and remit signed in Davos, but its terms have unsettled many invitees. Permanent members would be required to pay $1 billion, and the draft charter appears to concentrate ultimate decision-making power in Trump’s hands. The board, initially conceived to oversee the redevelopment of post-war Gaza, has drawn criticism from Europe, Israel, and liberal democracies wary of its scope and governance.

Reactions among invited leaders have been sharply divided. France’s President Emmanuel Macron declined outright, while Canada’s Mark Carney and Britain’s Keir Starmer signaled openness only to further discussion, rejecting the fee as unacceptable. Israel pushed back over the composition of a Gaza-related committee, while Argentina, Italy, Hungary, and Morocco expressed support. Russia has also been invited, a move that alarmed European officials given Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

IMF Raises Forecast for Global Growth as Tariff Drag Fades

(Source: The New York Times)

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has raised its forecast for global economic growth in 2026 to 3.3%, up 0.2 percentage points from October, due to a boost from tech investments and a continued boom in artificial intelligence (AI) investment.

However, the IMF warned that a re-evaluation of AI productivity gains or renewed trade tensions could bring disruptions.

The IMF noted that companies have redirected supply chains, while trade agreements have helped reduce tariffs, assuming the effective US tariff rate declines to 18.5% from around 25%.

The fund projected US economic growth at 2.4% in 2026, supported by major investments in AI infrastructure, and lowered its 2027 forecast to 2.0%.

It forecast Spain’s growth at 2.3% and kept the United Kingdom’s growth unchanged at 1.3%.

The IMF also projected China’s growth at 4.5% in 2026, 0.3 percentage points higher than its October estimates. The world economy “continues to show notable resilience despite significant Us-Led trade disruptions and heightened uncertainty,” said IMF chief economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas.

Spain train crash kills at least 39 and injures more than 150

Two high-speed trains collided in Southern Spain on Sunday night, killing at least 39 people and injuring over 150 others.

The collision occurred near Adamuz in the Córdoba province, around 360Km south of Madrid. Emergency services said the crash happened at about 7.45 pm local time, roughly 360km south of Madrid. A total of 122 people were reported injured, with 48 still in hospital and 12 in intensive care.

Spanish rail operator Renfe said around 400 passengers were travelling on the two trains involved, an Iryo service heading from Málaga to Madrid and an Alvia train bound for Huelva.

Spanish media reported the Huelva-Bound train was travelling at around 200Km/H at the moment of impact. Rescue and emergency teams working in Adamuz (Córdoba) at the scene of Sunday's fatal train accident have found bodies "hundreds of meters" from the point of collision.

The Andalusian President, Juanma Moreno Bonilla, anticipates that as the extrication work progresses, the death toll will rise above the current count of 39. Firefighters worked at the site throughout the night and have already brought in the machinery that will be used to lift the trains and open the tunnel.

Beijing introduces robotic-specific professional title system to boost talent development

Beijing has launched a trial regulation establishing a dedicated professional title evaluation system for robotics engineers to better align talent assessment with industry needs and support the city's ambition to become a global robotics innovation hub.

The policy will take effect in 2026, with the first round of professional title evaluations scheduled to begin in July this year.

Under the new rules, robotics will be added as a dedicated specialty within the engineering title system, with evaluations divided into four key directions: core components, Algorithms and software, robot design and manufacturing, and system integration and applications.

The framework covers the entire robotics value chain, from fundamental technologies to real-world deployment, ensuring that talent evaluation is more closely aligned with actual industrial needs.

The system comprises four professional levels: assistant engineer, engineer, senior engineer, and principal senior engineer, establishing a clear career pathway from early-career professionals to top-tier experts.

It will apply to technical staff working in state-owned entities, private companies, and social organizations engaged in robotics-related fields in Beijing.
