Ukraine advances drone production without Chinese components — NYT

Ukraine has made significant progress in producing drones without Chinese components and is now capable of manufacturing drones without parts imported from China. The country is betting on self-sufficiency in the field of drones, which are increasingly determining the situation on the battlefield.

According to the commander of the Ukrainian unmanned systems forces, drones are responsible for more than 90% of Russian military losses. Teams of Ukrainian military experts have been sent to Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia to help them defend against drones being launched from Iran in retaliation for the massive US and Israeli air attacks. Others are also helping the US defend its military presence in Jordan.

Ukraine’s experience in countering drones could prove useful for the Middle East countries facing mass drone attacks, as Iran relies primarily on quantity rather than technological sophistication. At the same time, such cooperation could strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities and help it obtain additional air defense systems. Midway through last year, the Trump administration reportedly brushed off an offer from Ukraine for assistance in strengthening defense systems against a lethal, widely used Iranian drone.

American officials consider ignoring the initial outreach a major misstep.

China firms launch OpenClaw rivals as Beijing warns against viral AI agent

Openclaw, an AI agent created by Austrian developer Peter Steinberger, has become a national obsession in China.

The program sits on top of a large language model and does more than just chat; it takes action. Users can ask it to comb through Emails, book travel, text their significant other “good morning,” or even trade Crypto, depending on how much access you grant it.

Chinese artificial intelligence companies, from established giants to startups, are launching their own versions of AI agent Openclaw as Beijing repeatedly warns of the risks of using the Western-developed tool that has taken the Chinese Tech world and social media by storm.

Openclaw is an open-source AI agent application that allows users to control computers via natural-language commands.

It was created by Austrian software developer Peter Steinberger, who joined ChatGPT developer OpenAI last month following his tool's viral success.

After deploying Openclaw locally, users can connect the AI framework to the API or application programming interface of any large language model.

Chinese authorities have moved to restrict state-run enterprises and government agencies from running Openclaw AI apps on office computers, acting swiftly to defuse potential security risks after companies and consumers across China began experimenting with the Agentic AI phenomenon.

International Energy Agency to release record oil reserves to calm markets

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has agreed to release a record 400 million barrels of oil from its strategic reserves to help stabilise markets.

The UK government will contribute 13.5 million barrels from its own stockpile for the release.

The conflict in Iran has halted shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and pushed the price of oil and gas sharply higher.

The IEA, which includes the UK, said the release – the largest in the 50-year history of the 32-Nation alliance – will account for around a third of its 1.2 billion barrel stockpile held for emergencies. members hold a further 600 million barrels of industry stocks under government obligations.

Germany and Austria say they are releasing parts of their oil reserves following an IEA request for its members to release 400 million barrels to help temper energy price spikes due to the Iran war.

The largest-ever previous collective release of emergency stocks by IEA member countries was 182.7 million barrels, in the wake of the energy shock prompted by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The historic decision reflects growing fears that the US and Israeli attacks on the oil-rich region are escalating into a deep global energy crisis.
