Chinese carmakers take on Tesla in race for robotaxi supremacy

Chinese car manufacturers are competing with Tesla in the burgeoning Robotaxi market as they make rapid advances in Self-Driving technology and seek new avenues for growth in the cutthroat electric vehicle business.

Homegrown automakers are striving to wow thousands of visitors at Auto China 2026, the world's biggest auto show, with AI-Powered smart cars capable of steering themselves through heavy traffic.

Xpeng, Volkswagen's Chinese partner, is equipping its EV lineup with Robotaxi-Level Self-Driving capabilities and aims to deploy autonomous vehicles for ride-hailing as soon as this year.

Geely, one of China's top automakers, unveiled its first Purpose-Built Robotaxi prototype, the eva cab, at the fair.

Caocao, Geely's Ride-Hailing arm, plans to deploy 100,000 driverless cabs worldwide by 2030, putting the operation in direct competition with Tesla's Cybercab project.

As of 2025, around 4,500 Robotaxis were roaming around pilot zones across about 10 cities in China.

"China's Robotaxi industry is approaching a tipping point as fleets scale up and some markets start to break even," Hsbc analysts wrote in a research NOTE earlier this month.
