Japan's new defense document to name China the biggest concern
Japan's Defense Ministry is expected to designate China as its most serious concern in its annual white paper, while committing to deeper cooperation with the US and like-minded nations to enhance deterrence capabilities.
The White paper will cover military developments in China, detailing Beijing's deployment of aircraft carriers in the Pacific dating back to June last year, and an incident in December in which Chinese military jets directed their radar at Japan Air Self-Defense Force aircraft.
The document will also articulate concerns about North Korea's nuclear and missile programs, calling the threat to Japan's security more serious and imminent than before, and touching upon the possibility that Pyongyang's military cooperation with Russia could lead to a Medium- to long-term military buildup. in April, Japan revised its three principles on transfer of defense equipment and technology, lifting its ban on the export of lethal defense equipment.
The White Paper is expected to present the change as creating an environment in which infrastructure needed to manufacture and maintain defense equipment is shared with export destinations, fostering mutual assistance.
The paper will also argue the arrangement will help shore up domestic manufacturing capabilities for such equipment. Examples of "new ways of fighting," such as the use of drones and artificial intelligence, are expected to be included, taking Russia's invasion of Ukraine as a case study.

Anthropic releases safe version of Claude Mythos AI model to public
Anthropic, the maker of the Claude artificial intelligence (AI) models, has launched two of its newest models, Claude fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5, on June 9, 2026.
These two models mark the debut of Anthropic's most advanced 'Mythos' family, placing them at the top of the company's AI technology hierarchy, surpassing the existing Opus class.
While both share the same underlying model, the key difference lies in the implementation of safeguards tailored to specific use cases.
Claude fable 5 is generally available, while Claude Mythos 5 is designed for restricted access to sensitive domains.
Anthropic is also releasing a version of Mythos that will be blocked from carrying out Cybersecurity tasks, months after warning that the powerful AI model could spot and exploit Vulnerabilities in critical software.
The new model, called Fable 5, is set to be rolled out on Tuesday with Guardrails that prevent it from responding to certain types of queries, including those related to Cybersecurity and biology.
In those cases, Anthropic said its Claude Chatbot will route responses through a different model called Opus 4.8.
Anthropic is also releasing the same model, without some of the safeguards, as a new version of Mythos called Mythos 5.
