This plain field with rich layers features space with bright outdoor living room and co-learning space for incorporating chatting, yoga, and Taekwondo classes. The clever multi-directional routes enable residents to wander in the public areas to participate in the outdoor market, watch outdoor movies, and grow vegetables or relax on the rooftop.

Architect Chien, Yi-Xue mentioned: Social housing provides people with the field of ideal social living, promotes natural gathering and exchange, and establishes a public relation of symbiosis, reciprocity, and altruism. The fourth social housing of Taichung City, Taiping Yuhsien Social Housing is built with consideration of architectural design and community building that not only realizes the Common Good Project but also establishes a milestone in the aesthetics of social housing.

The open space and the flowing horizon created through stacking layer by layer seem to create an interesting drama of imagination in life. The social housing is distinguished from the average buildings pursuing maximum sales areas and valid indoor space, the social housing preserves the field for residents to interact, whereas the shared living room, hallway, or the bridge connecting the buildings all represent the value of “ideal society” implemented by social housing. This design aims to awake the citizens of “green values” and to conform to the environment of “sustainable ecology” and “livable” humanity community. 

Create the most stylish and livable life for young people

The system and design of Taichung Social Housing take common feeling of community into consideration. The motive behind is to take care of residents and fill the social-housing community with vitality. “Mixed tenant” builds a friendly and healthy living environment, where residents communicate online to share simple happiness in life. The seed residents lead other habitants of all ages to experience life. At the moment they moved into social housing, they are part of the large family.

The new livable family style has drawn the attention of immigrants from other cities and young people under the age of 45. About 80% to 90% of them have applied and been admitted. Housing Development Department of Taichung City Government designed small family units and invited MUJI to modularize residential units of flexible use in limited space, using the “family” topic, in order to meet the need for living conversion in 24 hours. The design also introduced social welfare, nursery, and young startup as well as other resources. The design will set up community facilities such as kindergarten, social service centers, day care centers and convenient stores for residents to acquire arts to communicating the brand power of “Taichung Social Housing,” such housing has become the most stylish choice among young people. 

Build the base of dream fulfillment for dreamers

Since the completion of the first social housing, the Taichung City Government team has discovered many residents with tremendous talents, including Yi-Chun, the bakery expert living in Fongyuan Social Housing, and Yu-Ren, the seed resident with enthusiasm in community management. The platform of social housing allows residents to show their talents and they also invigorate the community, thereby accumulating the living culture of social-housing groups.

The future community building will be committed to highlighting the social value of social housing, activating young entrepreneur incubation plan and employing professional and counselor team, introduce brand-oriented, growth and young entrepreneur business models to provide employment counseling for residents of young entrepreneurs, expert counseling, and platform matching resources. Consequently, residents committed to entrepreneurship will have a young entrepreneur incubation center for fulfilling their dreams. Moreover, the residents will receive the opportunity to turn their life around during their 6-year residency.

New Paradigm of Social Housing – Build up the microcity

Taiping Yuhsien Social Housing builds the prototype of Common Good Project through social-housing aesthetics and revolves the myth of social housing stigma through the beauty of architecture, so that aesthetics will continue to affect the social housing life and national qualities. The spatial dimension with applicable design allows residents to outline their personal living style. The public area with more value and filled with natural elements is offered to the residents to create creation, sharing, learning, and symbiotic social-housing life. The overall design exhibits the “better resident life through sharing” mentioned by Huang Wen-Bin, the Director of Urban Development Bureau.

Taichung social housing continues to reform in design, from the innovation in building design and other social programs, such as Seed Resident Project, young entrepreneur counseling, social welfare care, which also builds a solid foundation in upgrading the objectives in the social-housing economy and community gathering. The residents are expected to resume traditional living culture of emotional support and reciprocal cooperation, thereby building an immigrating and livable microcity.
