China’s exports surge 27% from a year earlier as AI boom drives strong demand

China's exports surged in June, buoyed by orders for chips to fuel the global AI boom and automobiles, deepening producers' reliance on overseas buyers as policymakers in the world's No. 2 economy continue to grapple with how to boost demand at home.

The stronger-than-expected trade performance keeps China on track to post a surplus topping $1 trillion for a second straight year, with factories sustaining sales despite slowing growth in major economies and trade frictions with Washington. Exports climbed 27% from a year earlier in U.S. dollar value terms, customs data showed on Tuesday, their best performance in four months, outpacing the 19.4% gain in May. Imports grew 36% in June, the largest jump since June 2021, gaining pace from the 27.4% growth in May and beating economists' forecast for a 24% growth.

China's exports of vehicles, especially EVs, and other tech-related products have boomed as the rapid adoption of AI increases demand for semiconductors and other electronic equipment.

The strength in export manufacturing has helped to offset weakness in domestic spending and investment.

The wildest allegations in Apple’s trade secrets lawsuit against OpenAI

Apple has filed a 41-page trade secret lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging a coordinated effort to extract confidential information from current and former Apple employees.

The complaint is filled with unusually detailed allegations, including one message that reads, “ Lol, I found out I can access the [network storage], so Funny. ”

OpenAI has only commented publicly via a statement shared on X on Friday, which read: “We have no interest in other companies’ trade secrets. We remain focused on building innovative technology that empowers people everywhere.”

The latest remarks come four days after Apple filed the suit, which claimed that OpenAI took proprietary technology to help develop its own new family of artificial Intelligence-Powered devices.

Apple is seeking monetary damages and an order requiring OpenAI to halt the alleged conduct and destroy any proprietary materials. Legal remedies could take months or years to materialize, but the consequences of the lawsuit itself are likely to be felt more immediately.

The lawsuit threatens to disrupt the AI company’s device ambitions long before the case is resolved. In the suit, Apple alleges that OpenAI asked former Apple employees — and even prospective recruits — to bring information about unreleased products.

Apple also claims that OpenAI instructed hires on how to evade its security procedures, using a checklist developed by the Tech giant’s former iPhone design chief.

Bloomberg ordered to pay damages in Singapore defamation case

Singapore's High Court has ordered Bloomberg News Agency to pay SGD230,000 ($178,000) in damages to two senior government ministers in a defamation case linked to a report on luxury property deals. Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam and Manpower Minister Tan See Leng filed the suits against the US-based global news organisation and its reporter, Low De Wei, in January 2025, alleging the article had harmed their reputations.

The article, titled "Singapore Mansion Deals are Increasingly Shrouded in Secrecy", discussed the sale of Good Class Bungalows in Singapore and claimed there was a lack of public records regarding GCB transactions.

It mentioned private properties purchased by Shanmugam and Tan. In a judgment released on July 14, Judge Audrey Lim found that the article had indeed defamed the ministers.

She ruled that it linked the duo's property transactions to secrecy, opacity, and money laundering, creating a loophole in the financial system.

The ministers said on Tuesday that they will donate the damages awarded to them in their defamation suit against Bloomberg to charity.
