Trump hits back at Canada over retaliatory tariffs, says neighbour has been hurting US farmers

US President Donald Trump has hit back at Canada after a breakdown in trade talks between the two nations.

New Canadian tariffs targeting the US steel and dairy Industries will take effect on September 8, Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced.

Carney cited 'Last-Minute changes in the US proposed terms' which were 'Unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal' for the withdrawal, while setting September 8 as the start date for retaliatory tariffs.

The new tariffs mark an increase in tensions between President Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney, and will likely make broader talks to renew the US-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement more difficult.

Chinese humanoid robot breaks Usain Bolt's 100m dash record at 9.39 seconds

The world Humanoid robot games, in its second year, began on Saturday in Beijing and featured 51 events, including 30 sports Competitions and 21 Scenario-Based contests. More than 40% require robots to operate fully autonomously, according to Huawei, a Tech partner of the games.

The five-day event highlights China's rapid progress in robotics amid a heated Tech race with the US.

The games combine events modelled on human sports with those designed to test the robots in simulated factories, restaurants, offices, and in emergency situations. On Saturday, two robots ran faster than Usain Bolt's 9.58-Second world record in the 100-Meter Sprint.

Another Humanoid, the same model as the 100-Meter champion, ran 400 meters in 39.7 seconds, faster than South African Wayde Van Niekerk's world record of 43.03 seconds.

China has promoted Humanoid robots as a strategic emerging industry, with policymakers and companies betting that advances in AI and hardware will accelerate their use in manufacturing, logistics, and consumer applications. Investor enthusiasm for the sector was on display earlier this week when shares in Unitree, China's best-known Humanoid robot maker, jumped more than fivefold in its Shanghai trading debut on Wednesday, giving the company a market value of about $50 billion.

Singapore PM flags 'unsettling' AI risks, says Singapore ready to put in safeguards

Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has said that as technology becomes more powerful, Singapore will have to guard against risks that are harder to predict.

Speaking at the National day rally, Wong cited the example of an ai model tested by OpenAI that broke out of its test environment, moved into the wider Internet and infiltrated the systems of another company. “No one told the AI agent to attack the company,” said Wong. “But in trying to complete its tasks, the agent did things which its developers did not want it to do. Such developments are unsettling”, he said, adding that AI agents are becoming more capable and will be able to do more with less human supervision. Countries should ideally work together to set common rules and safeguards, he said, but this is getting harder as major powers seek to move faster and gain an advantage over their competitors.

Singapore will do its part to bring countries and companies together and build coalitions around practical safeguards.

During his budget speech in February, Wong announced the formation of the National AI Council to coordinate and drive Singapore’s AI strategy.

Wong also announced that social media platforms will be required to put in place stronger safeguards for children and teenagers.
