TSMC affiliate already eyes expansion as first Singapore plant 'sells out'

VisionPower semiconductor manufacturing company (VSMC), a joint venture between VIS, an affiliate of Taiwan's TSMC, and the Netherlands' NXP Semiconductors, has opened its first advanced chipmaking plant in Singapore and is already eyeing a second facility, with its new capacity "sold out" due to the massive AI infrastructure boom.

The fabrication facility, or "fab", is opening amid soaring demand for its power management and analog chips. Test production began in June, just 18 months after construction started, well ahead of the more than two years typically required to build a chip plant.

The first batch of chips achieved a yield of at least 99%, according to VIS. Mass production is scheduled in early 2027.

The plant will also help TSMC produce critical "Interposers," used in advanced chip packaging, which serve as a base for connecting different types of chips for leading artificial intelligence chipmakers such as Nvidia, Google and Broadcom.

TSMC is VIS's largest shareholder, with a stake of about 19%. VIS chairman Leuh Fang said at a news conference that demand for power-related and analog chips used in industrial applications, particularly in data centres, continued to outstrip supply.

After AI agents hacked into companies, Nvidia unveils a tool to keep them in check

Nvidia has launched a new software platform to help developers test and deploy artificial intelligence (AI) agents and keep them in a secure environment.

The platform includes tools that let developers continuously monitor and govern AI behavior, ensuring agents follow the rules.

The software includes technology that “can quarantine agents that attempt to move outside their boundaries in milliseconds.” The move comes as OpenAI and Anthropic, the top two AI labs, are investigating numerous instances where their agents, which are AI systems capable of carrying out complex tasks, hacked into commercial and government systems.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, head of the world's largest company whose chips have powered most of the AI boom, has rejected calls for broad AI safety regulations and instead framed the escaped agents as an engineering problem to be solved, akin to making automobiles safer.

China's BeiDou navigation system expands into diverse sectors amid tech convergence

China is rapidly integrating its Beidou navigation satellite system (BDS) with frontier technologies, including 5G and 6G, artificial intelligence, remote sensing, and low-earth-orbit satellites, to expand its application from consumer devices to industrial operations and power growth across sectors.

Beidou's integration with frontier technologies is unlocking new capabilities for Beidou-Enabled devices. More than 98% of Smartphones sold in China now support Beidou positioning, and over 100 million passenger vehicles are equipped with Beidou onboard systems, according to an industry report released by the GNSS and lBS Association of China (GIAC). Beyond consumer applications, Beidou is reshaping traditional industries.

In Shanghai's suburban Farmlands, more than 10,000 mu (about 667 hectares) of high-standard farmland have become a showcase for smart agriculture, with Beidou-enabled machinery handling every step of rice cultivation--from plowing to harvesting. By the end of 2025, Beidou had penetrated key sectors such as transportation, energy, urban development, and emergency relief, while expanding into emerging areas such as the low-altitude economy, marine economy, and cultural and sports events.
