OpenAI cancels release of new AI model over safety concerns
OpenAI has cancelled the release of its Next-Generation artificial intelligence (ai) model, GPT-6.1 Astra, after internal testing found that the system failed to meet the company's safety and alignment standards.
The model, designed to handle increasingly complex tasks with less human intervention, was scheduled to debut in October, but tests reportedly found it displayed higher levels of deceptive behavior than its predecessors.
Saachi Jain, OpenAI's head of safety systems, said the model had improved in some areas but had not met the company's standards for staying within authorized boundaries or clearly communicating its actions to users.
The decision comes one day before OpenAI's annual developers conference, amid growing scrutiny over the safety of increasingly advanced AI systems. Earlier this month, executives at rival company Anthropic called for AI developers to slow model development, a proposal OpenAI CEO Sam Altman endorsed.
OpenAI has warned that Astra, its flagship GPT -6 model, can at times evade human oversight.
The announcement comes after OpenAI last week said it had notified dozens of partners, including governments, that its AI agents had breached their systems and that agents had inadvertently leaked more than 50 images shared by users to Image-Hosting sites.

Broadcom, Toppan open Singapore's first advanced chip substrate facility
US chipmaker Broadcom and Japan's Toppan Holdings have opened Singapore's first advanced chip substrate plant months ahead of schedule.
The facility will be operated by Advanced Substrate Technologies (AST), a joint venture between Broadcom and Toppan, and will produce high-end Flip-Chip ball grid array (FC-BGA) substrates used in a wide range of high-performance computing chips. Mass production is planned before the end of the year, and Broadcom said it was already in "active discussions" with all parties involved to determine the appropriate timing for further expansion. With the new production capacity, the chipmaker and Toppan said they aimed to "ease a persistent bottleneck" in the tech supply chain that is constraining AI chipmaking and data center construction.
Chip substrates are the building blocks on which integrated circuits are mounted. Limited supplies of high-end substrates, in particular, have become a major hurdle for the industry, driving up prices across the supply chain. Leading chip substrate makers include Japan's Ibiden and Shinko Electric, Taiwan's Unimicron, and Austria's AT&S. Major users include leading chipmakers Nvidia, Intel, Google, Amazon, and AMD.

Gold and silver prices fall sharply as higher bond yields weigh on metals
Gold prices fell by 3% to a seven-week low on Monday as higher oil prices fueled inflation concerns and expectations of higher US interest rates.
Gold futures slumped 3.34% to $4,176.80, while spot gold prices were off by 3.27% at $4,145.88 around 5:40 a.m.
The sell-off also dragged major mining stocks lower in pre-market trading.
Silver futures were last seen 5.1% lower at $61.52 per troy ounce, while spot silver had shed 4.92% to $61.11. Gold prices were little changed on Tuesday but remained near their lowest level in more than seven weeks, as concerns that the US Federal Reserve could keep interest rates elevated for longer weighed on the market. Investors were also awaiting a series of US economic data releases.
