Anthropic boss calls for slowing pace of AI development

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called on artificial intelligence (AI) firms to slow down the development of the powerful technology amid mounting worries over the risks of "Superintelligent" computer systems.

His comments came a few days after AI researcher Jacob Coxon, who left OpenAI to join Anthropic, decided to leave the industry, accusing both US companies of "gambling with our lives" in the race to develop models capable of self-improvement.

Amodei proposed a three-step plan that he said will help temper the pace of development without "sacrificing commercial advantage or the United States' lead in AI," though he conceded that some steps may be easier to achieve than others.

Anthropic is actively gearing up for what is widely expected to be a historic Ipo, though the company has not officially disclosed when it plans to debut.

The first step of the plan grants third-party evaluators employee-level access to the company to verify safety practices and report incidents.

The second step encourages leading AI companies within Democratic countries to coordinate and establish common safety standards.

Fujitsu to export AI chips built on supercomputer tech to US, Asia

Fujitsu, the Japanese semiconductor manufacturer, will begin exporting AI semiconductors developed with technology used in its supercomputer "Fugaku" to the US and Asia as early as next year.

The company will sell its homegrown advanced AI CPU, Monaka, and will also begin selling AI servers equipped with Monaka both domestically and internationally.

Fujitsu aims to achieve cumulative sales of 250 billion yen ($1.6 billion) by fiscal 2030 through external CPU sales.

Separately, it seeks to sell 60,000 AI servers. Driven by AI demand, the semiconductor market is expected to surge 90% year-on-year to JPY240 trillion in 2026, according to World Semiconductor Trade Statistics, an industry group.

BRICS nations call for ‘maximum restraint’ in Middle East war

Members of the 11-nation BRICS group, including China, Russia, Iran and India, called for calm in the Middle East at a summit in New Delhi on Saturday, overcoming earlier divisions to issue a joint statement.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, who joined Russian, Iranian, Indian and other leaders in India’s capital, told the summit that the Middle East war “does not serve the common interests of the international community”. Foreign ministers of the BRICS grouping had failed to agree on a joint statement when they met in May, with Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates divided over the war that began with US-Israeli strikes on February 28.

But leaders stated on Saturday after intense diplomatic efforts by host India, as the bloc seeks to bolster its global influence and address conflict, trade turbulence and energy security.

The joint statement called for the protection of civilians, urged respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States, and stressed the need to protect global trade, supply chains, energy flows and Maritime security.

The BRICS summit is a test of the diplomatic clout of a bloc set up in 2009 to challenge a world order dominated by the United States and its Western allies.
