From Engineer to Crypto Titan

Standing behind a video camera in rimmed glasses and a simple Binance T-shirt, Changpeng Zhao (CZ) looks far more like an introverted software engineer than a ruthless crypto tycoon. Yet, the exchange he founded in July 2017 grew into an unprecedented empire.

By 2025, Binance boasted nearly 300 million users and an annual trading volume of $34 trillion, outstripping the full-year stock trading volume of the New York Stock Exchange. CZ reflects that the first 40 years of his life were unremarkable. However, founding Binance launched a reality so unbelievable that he feels even movies lack the imagination to capture it.

The Legal Storm and Prison Time

Three years ago, the U.S. Department of Justice sued Binance and CZ for Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) violations, operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business, and international sanction breaches. CZ voluntarily flew to the United States and pled guilty to failing to register early U.S. users under the BSA.

Maintaining that there was no fraud, money laundering, or user financial loss, he nevertheless received a four-month prison sentence, making him the richest inmate in U.S. prison history. Behind bars, he spent fifteen minutes a day typing draft memoirs on a shared offline computer.

A year after serving his sentence and paying his fines, President Donald Trump pardoned his conviction record and ended the Justice Department's oversight period.

Deep Roots with Taiwan

Despite being born in Jiangsu, China, CZ speaks Mandarin with a distinct Taiwanese accent. After emigrating to Vancouver at age twelve to join his academic father, his social circle was mostly composed of affluent Taiwanese immigrant families.

His teenage friends and first girlfriend were Taiwanese, and he has visited Taiwan over thirty times. He even briefly considered studying biology to become a doctor on the advice of a friend's mother before ultimately sticking to computer programming.

Building a Global Powerhouse

Before founding Binance, CZ was already financially independent through his work building trading systems in Tokyo, New York for Bloomberg, and Shanghai. When he launched Binance, his deep system architecture knowledge allowed the platform to outperform competitors in speed and stability.

He built a company culture that employees describe as extremely hardcore, defined by intense work hours and rapid execution. Operating without a physical headquarters, Binance established a global, borderless management model where a decentralized workforce resolves issues around the clock.

Former co-founder Zhang Ling notes that CZ evaluates staff purely on results, remains razor-sharp in decision-making, and maintains extraordinary emotional stability under high pressure.

Leading Through Action

In his interview, CZ emphasized that true corporate culture is defined by actions rather than words. Early in Binance's history, when China banned ICOs, the platform spent six million dollars—representing 40 percent of its assets at the time—to compensate user losses out of pocket, even though it had no legal obligation to do so.

Regarding his legal troubles, CZ admitted the outcome was worse than expected, but he focuses on resolving issues rather than dwelling on unfairness. He states that his ultimate goal is simply to contribute to society according to his capacity so that when he grows old, he can comfortably say he did his best.

Life Beyond Binance

Stepping down as CEO of Binance has allowed CZ to pivot toward new endeavors. He currently spends his time running Giggle Academy, a non-profit educational platform that has reached over 600,000 users.

Additionally, he mentors Web3 founders and incubates early-stage startups through YZi Labs, while advising ten to twenty government entities on creating effective crypto regulatory frameworks. Looking ahead, he remains eager to keep learning, keeping a close eye on emerging fields like biotechnology and artificial intelligence.

The Unwritten Next Chapter

Having traversed the heights of financial success, the turbulence of legal battles, and the quiet reflection of a prison cell, CZ views his journey not as a tragedy or a triumph, but simply as a complex game to be solved. Stripped of his executive title and unburdened by corporate noise, he has returned to his core identity: an engineer seeking the next meaningful problem to fix.

For a man whose past reality has already outpaced the imagination of Hollywood, the future remains wide open. As he moves into education, emerging technology, and global policy, Changpeng Zhao is no longer just building a company—he is actively engineering the legacy he will leave behind.
