Google to shift Pixel production to Vietnam in 2027
Google plans to shift the production of its flagship Pixel Smartphones, Smartwatches, and Wireless Earbuds from China to Vietnam by 2027.
The move is driven by rising geopolitical tensions between the United States and China that have pushed major Tech firms to diversify their supply chain risks.
The transition marks a complete shift of high-end product development and manufacturing to Vietnam, building on the success of Pixel Smartphone assembly in the country in 2026.
While India remains under consideration as a secondary manufacturing site, Vietnam has emerged as the trusted hub for Google’s more technically complex products.
If successful, Google will become the second major Tech giant after Samsung Electronics to fully relocate its manufacturing operations out of China. Alongside its manufacturing pivot, Google is adjusting its strategy to compete in an increasingly fierce Smartphone market.
The company has reportedly raised its Pixel shipment target for this year by 8-10%, despite surging costs for memory chips and critical hardware components. To offset margin pressures, Google has consolidated its memory chip procurement across its cloud and hardware divisions into a single bulk order.
The move boosts its bargaining power with dominant suppliers like Micron Technology, Samsung, and SK Hynix to secure more favourable contract terms.

China's CXMT launches mass production of advanced LPDDR6 memory chips
China's major memory chipmaker, CXMT, has begun mass production of LPDDR6, its most advanced mobile dynamic random access memory (DRAM), with the chips set to be equipped in Xiaomi's 18-fold flagship foldable mobile phone, a statement from CXMT said on Sunday.
The statement called it "the world's first commercial deployment of LPDDR6," marking the first time a Chinese memory maker has brought a leading-edge memory standard to the market ahead of DRAM suppliers overseas.
The memory chip will be paired with Xiaomi's in-house 3-nanometer Xring O3 processor, unveiled on August 24 as the first chipset to support LPDDR6.
The foldable phone is expected to launch in September.
CXMT detailed the chip in its 2026 semi-annual report, saying LPDDR6 reaches peak transfer speeds of up to 12,800 Mbps and capacities of up to 16Gb per chip, an upgrade over the previous LPDDR5X generation.

OpenAI’s chief economist sees ‘care economy’ jobs growing in AI age
OpenAI's chief economist, Ronnie Chatterji, has said that some of the clearest signs of AI's impact on work may not yet be appearing in unemployment headlines.
Instead, Chatterji says, they can be seen in the tasks workers are increasingly able to do themselves, including work that might have fallen to colleagues in other roles. He stressed that early worries about job elimination due to AI have failed to materialize, citing software development as an example.
“Just because a task is exposed to AI doesn’t mean it’s gonna substitute for that,” Chatterji said at the European Central Bank’s annual retreat in Sintra, Portugal. “We need to think a lot harder about what jobs are, how they will evolve, and that will help us give advice to people about labor-market trends rather than being optimistic or pessimistic.”
