Google Maps changes Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' in US

Google maps has renamed Lake Ontario as "Lake America" on maps seen by US users after President Donald Trump announced he was Renaming the body of water, with a Canadian official slamming the cross-border tensions as "absolutely backwards." people in Canada will still see the body of water labeled Lake Ontario, the indigenous-rooted name used since the 17th century, on their devices and computers, the US-based tech giant said.

The Nomenclatural spat erupted as the latest element of Trump's "America first" narrative, with the longtime allies ramping up a trade war that has seen Washington and Ottawa slap tit-for-tat tariffs on each other.

The order does not compel Canada or any international organization to adopt the new name, and Canadian officials have spoken out against the move. Rhetoric over the naming of Lake Ontario is the public face of an escalating trade dispute between the us and its northern neighbor involving a 50% us tariff on Canadian steel and retaliatory tariffs from Ottawa.

The President's order affects the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which sets the standards for official U.S. maps.

It does not affect Canadian naming conventions or how the rest of the world refers to the Lake.

AI-driven cyber risk is top concern for global financial stability, watchdog says

The head of the Financial Stability Board (FSB) of the United Kingdom, Andrew Bailey, has warned of the growing threat posed by advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models that could trigger a disorderly correction in global financial markets. in a two-page letter to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, Bailey said the emergence of so-called "frontier AI models" is showing "increasingly sophisticated autonomy and problem-solving abilities, as well as threat capabilities." Writing in his capacity as chair of the FSB, Bailey identified the potential impact of frontier AI on Cyber risk as "the most immediate concern" for the financial system. "Frontier AI may have the ability materially to alter the speed, scale and economics of Cyber risk, which could undermine market confidence system-wide, especially due to highly concentrated third-party service providers," he said.

Bailey's comments highlight concerns among regulators that advanced AI could accelerate the discovery of cyber vulnerabilities, forcing faster patching and reshaping.

China’s factory activity contracts in August despite an uptick in export demand

China's official manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) improved slightly to 49.8 in August from 49.2 in July, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

However, overall manufacturing remained in contraction, while services activity remained weak, underscoring deepening imbalances in the economy and fueling calls for policy measures to boost the economy.

The divergence between manufacturing and service sectors suggests that China will continue to rely on manufacturing and exports to drive growth as momentum remains under pressure from lackluster domestic consumption and investment.

PMI readings, based on monthly surveys of companies, are measured on a scale of 0 to 100. A reading above 50 indicates an expansion, while below 50 reflects a contraction.

China's economy has come under mounting strain, with growth slowing to 4.3% in the second quarter, the weakest pace since late 2022, as soft domestic demand and a prolonged property slump continue to weigh on activity.

The economic malaise deepened further in the second half this year, as consumer spending stalled, urban investment contracted at a faster pace, and unemployment ticked higher. Retail sales and industrial output both slowed in July, while growth in industrial profits cooled to its weakest pace this year.
